The Arts
Explore the history of creative and performing arts at RGS

Creative and performing arts are a vibrant and essential part of RGS life.

Dramatic productions, musical performances, dance shows and art exhibitions are a regular fixture in the calendar, but this has not always been the case across our history.

Before the 20th century, opportunities to perform or practise creative subjects at RGS were limited or non-existent.

With developments to widen the general curriculum in the late 19th century, improved facilities on our move to Jesmond in 1906, and the enthusiasm of many talented staff members, the arts began to flourish. Many Old Novocastrians have gone on to pursue outstanding careers in the creative arts since leaving RGS.

This section explores the history of arts subjects at RGS, including Music, Drama, Art and Dance. Find out more about how these subjects have developed, and the huge range of co-curricular clubs that have given students important creative opportunities over the last century.
