History of Music

Before the 1920s, music education at RGS was extremely limited, and mainly confined to class singing in the Junior School. This changed with the vision of Headmaster ER Thomas (Staff 1922-48) and his hiring of talented composer Arthur Milner (Staff 1926-48) as music master in 1926. Music now became a core part of our school life.

The first RGS orchestra, formed in 1926, consisted of just six instruments: four violins, one cello and one clarinet. By 1928, early co-curricular opportunities (then called 'Leisure Hour Occupations') included: organ recitals, Junior Treble Choir, Orchestra, Musical Appreciation Class and a Choral Society. The first school concert was performed on 29 February 1929 – just over 96 years ago.

Since then, music has become a great strength of the school. Fifty years after its 1926 beginning, the RGS of 1976 could boast a First, Second and Third Orchestra, Junior Orchestra, School Choir, Junior Choir and Assembly Choir, Choral Society, Chamber Music Classes, Middle School Music Society and Jazz Club!

Musical performances at RGS have a long tradition of marking significant moments. A special Gala Concert was held on 14 June 1975 to mark the 50th anniversary of RGS music, as well as the retirement of long-serving Director of Music Jack Wolstenholme (Staff 1948-75). A mixture of students, Old Novos and staff performed in the orchestra, including Frederick G Jeavans (ON 1925-29), who played at that first concert in 1929. Talented pianist Peter Taylor (ON 1938-49), a former Lord Chief Justice, was soloist. The money raised from the concert was donated to the building appeal for a new music centre.

The more recent construction of the Performing Arts Centre in 2006 has allowed music to continue to flourish. A century of music at RGS has built the foundations for the exceptional musical talent of today’s whole school community, which was showcased at the 500th anniversary concert on 19 March 2025, staged at The Glasshouse International Centre for Music.
