The Art of Novo

Novo magazine has long been the place for RGS students to showcase their art. Since the 1970s, the front cover has been adorned with artworks – paintings, photographs, illustrations.

The origins of Novo magazine go back to 1885 when the first issue was published at our Rye Hill site. A full front cover design was not used until 1909. The 1930s saw bold covers full of geometric shapes, changing to the simple illustration of the old oak table in the 1950s. The simple but striking red and buff design of 1960 – inspired by Mondrian – was down to Peter Walker (ON 1952-60).

In Novo’s later decades, artworks and photographs would also be printed throughout the pages. The magazine has been a chronicle of RGS creativity.
