First World War

The First World War witnessed a colossal loss of life across the world. Hundreds of Old Novocastrians signed-up to fight for their country on the outbreak of war and served throughout the conflict.

Many joined local ‘Pals Battalions’ - so-called as groups of friends and colleagues volunteered together to form new battalions in response to Lord Kitchener’s call-to-arms in August 1914. The Northumberland Fusiliers saw the highest number of these service battalions formed in any regiment across the country.

In total, 171 Old Novos were killed during the war. They served across the British Army and Navy, but also in the military services of other nations: Canada, India, Australia, New Zealand and Egypt. The oldest person on the RGS Roll of Honour was 48 years old, the youngest aged just 17. An RGS teacher, Mr Mackenzie, was also killed in action, as was the son of the Music Master, Mr Smallwood. Loss would have touched every person in the RGS community.

RGS ROLL OF HONOUR

A detailed Roll of Service was compiled shortly after 1918, by teacher Arthur R. Laws. This was created from information shared with the school by Old Novos on active service and their families. The RGS Archives holds hundreds of these original letters, some of which include photographs with them.

To honour those former students who gave their lives, a permanent war memorial was installed in our school. This is our Memorial Organ which stands in the Main Hall to this day. It was funded by the Chair of Governors Sir Arthur Munro Sutherland and formally unveiled in 1923.

Programme from the event dedicating and opening the RGS Memorial Organ, 1st Jun 1923. [RGS Archives, ref: 790]
