Cold War thriller captures Sixth Formers imaginations

German Sixth Form students headed to the Tyneside Cinema as part of their Modern Languages study days where they would watch Christian Petzold's Cold War thriller Barbara

Students were captured by Nina Hoss's portrayal of a Berlin doctor who gets banished to a rural East German hospital as punishment for applying for an exit visa.

After the film, the students were led by Newcastle University language ambassadors in small working groups and encouraged to discuss the film in greater detail, specifically looking at certain scenes and characters/actors as well as the historical events and how they impacted on society then and today.

It certainly captured the imagination of our students and they commented that the film was a quiet but disconcerting masterpiece portraying the way of life in the GDR very realistically and should be viewed by a wider audience.
