DEBATING SOCIETY!

DEBATING SOCIETY!

The Debating Society has been enjoying an incredible run of results in recent weeks due to the hard work and dedication of the students involved. Caitrin Robertson and Fraser Brown (pictured), both in the Upper Sixth, have seen off talented opposition from a number of schools in the region to reach both the Regional Final of the English Speaking Union (ESU) Mace Competition and the National Finals of the Cambridge Schools Debating Competition.

In the Mace competition they have already competed in two regional rounds against the very best from other schools in the North East and have debated the banning of cosmetic surgery and the withdrawal of prison sentences for non-violent offenders. In the Cambridge Schools competition they were the winners from a very competitive field of sixteen other teams and will now go on to face the best schools from around the country and abroad at the Cambridge Union Society on 28th February.

The society has also done very well in the Oxford Schools Debating Competition with two of the three teams entered progressing the National Finals in March. From a field of twenty, two RGS teams consisting of Adam Perros, Roisin Kennan, Luci Damjanovic and Matthew Bradbury were amongst the three to proceed in a round which was badly delayed by Storm Henry. The third team of James Tovee and Matthew Thomas very narrowly missed out on a place in the finals and acquitted themselves very well indeed!
