Engineering the future

Engineering the future

ON Nick Miller (80-87) returned to RGS recently as part of a joint invitation between RGS EngiSoc and RGS Careers.

Nick is Chief Production Engineer at Jaguar Land Rover and gave a fascinating presentation to students from Year 8 through to Upper Sixth about the challenges facing engineers in the automotive industry.

With a growing awareness of the need for a sustainable future and changing perceptions of the role of personal transport, his talk showed how engineers are embracing the themes of autonomous vehicles, connectivity, electric propulsion and the concept of shared, rather than privately owned cars.

Students were inspired by Nick's talk and asked a number of interesting and relevant questions at the end of the talk before Nick took the group out to examine some of the features on the 4.4 litre diesel V8 Range Rover he had brought with him. This innovative model will soon be replaced with a car incorporating more of the technologies that were discussed in the talk.

A huge thank you from EngiSoc, Careers and all at RGS to Nick for a highly informative talk.
