Royal Grammar School

Newcastle

Fingers crossed!

Fingers crossed!

This evening will see the School’s senior staff (all except poor Mr Craig, who has Year 5 entrance exams to supervise tomorrow morning!) down in London for the TES Independent Schools Awards. Somewhat embarrassingly (because we like to be modest), we have been shortlisted for the Senior Leadership Team of the Year category.

I must emphasise that this is not about us strutting around looking in charge! The nomination is based on our work on mental health and wellbeing in the School – very much the proactive development of resilience as well as dealing with troubles and problems when they arise.

I wouldn’t claim that anything we might win (and we have no idea until later tonight whether we shall be successful or not) will change the world, the public by and large is probably not aware of the TES Independent Schools Awards! But within the profession such things are noticed, and while most of our profile-raising activities are naturally directed at parents, prospective students, opinion-formers and policymakers, we are never complacent when it comes to recruiting the fantastic teachers we need at RGS. So our entry for these awards is calculated to maintain our profile within the teaching profession.

We are already enjoying the well-deserved accolade of seeing our Junior School ranked (yet again) 11th in the country by The Sunday Times Parent Power. And, whether we are successful tonight or not, we already have the kudos of being shortlisted, undoubtedly it will be a glitzy evening down in London!

More news on Monday when we know the outcome.
