Girls land national spelling bee final spot

Girls land national spelling bee final spot

A trio of Year 7 students represented RGS at the regional finals of the Routes into Languages Spelling Bee competition recently, held at Emmanuel College, Gateshead.

The Spelling Bee sees students compete against one another, correctly spelling out words that are given to them in their chosen language, French or German. They are provided with 150 words prior to the competition to learn and then have one minute in front of the judges (and audience) to spell as many words correctly as they can.

Representing RGS were Akshita Ramesh, Katie Thompson and Johanna Vormoor, all in Year 7. There was a lot of excitement and nerves in the build up to the competition, but all three managed to put in a fantastic performance against some very tough competition.

Akshita won the German competition and Katie secured second spot, meaning they both progress to the national finals, which will be held in June down in Cambridge.

The girls will now learn another set of words provided to them from Routes into Languages ahead of the national finals.
