James’ Czech Chess Success!

James’ Czech Chess Success!

Over the Easter holidays, James Moreby was selected to play for England in a major international chess tournament in Frydek Mistek in the Czech Republic near to the Polish and Slovakian borders. The tournament, known as the "35th Tournament of Chess Talents", is a prestigious event in the European chess calendar and this year attracted players from many countries across the world, from as far apart as India, Russia and South America.

Although only 31 days too old for the Under-12 event, James was the top ranked English player amongst a strong English contingent in the Under-15 event and started the event as the overall 4th seed of the 70 competitors. The event was played over 8 rounds of chess across the course of 6 days. With 6 wins, 2 draws and no losses over the 8 games, James won the tournament outright with 7 points out of 8. At the prize presentation, James was initially delighted to receive a rather heavy trophy even though he later struggled with the weight of it during the lengthy ceremony!

Winning a significant event in Eastern Europe is a major milestone in any chess player's career. We hope that this victory will help prepare James for the rest of the chess season and, in particular, provide a solid base from which to get ready for this year's World Chess Championships in Greece in October
