Patrick Ness Visits RGS

It was a coup to be offered a last-minute visit by Patrick Ness, author of much-loved fiction for teenagers and adults. As Carlo Fazlic announced in his brilliant introduction: ‘Patrick Ness ruined my summer holidays. Mrs Richardson suggested I take the first in his Chaos Walking series to read on the beach. I did. But unfortunately, such is the gripping pace and adventurous quality of his writing, I had devoured it before the plane had even left the tarmac. Two weeks with plenty of time on my hands, but nothing to read!’ Patrick entertained Year 7 with his directness. As he said: ‘I don’t believe that you should ignore, when you’re writing for teenagers, the things I know you are thinking about’. He had two important truths to impart: ‘Where do ideas come from? They come from everywhere!’ And : ‘you, right now, today, in this room are not too young to write rich, interesting, exciting fiction’—something he wishes he had been told when he was a child. We hope to get him back into the RGS as there weren’t many disappointed fans who couldn’t be squeezed into the Lecture Room.
