RGS Debaters Continue to Impress!

RGS Debaters Continue to Impress!

Debating at RGS is going from strength to strength and on Saturday six teams competed in the Manchester Schools Competition run by the Manchester University Debating Union. There were about 69 teams competing altogether on motions that ranged from ‘punishments for sportspersons guilty of serious offences’ to ‘replacing jobseeker’s allowance with a universal basic income’. All of our teams finished in 1st or 2nd place in at least one round, and one team – Urban Coningham and Caitrin Robertson, missed out on the final on speaker points, having drawn level with the four finalists on team points. Other success stories included Roisin Kennan who once again impressed finishing joint 15th in the speaker points out of 138 speakers. All in all, a fantastic result for the RGS debaters! This month we have more competitions in Oxford schools’ regionals and at Nottingham and one team from RGS has made it through to the finals of the Cambridge schools competition which will be held in Cambridge later this month. Keep up the good work!
