Rugby kicks off 2016/17

The weekend before term starts saw our rugby teams in action against George Watson's College, with the first XV making the journey north of the border to play on  George Watson's home turf.

Following a short and intense pre-season, the boys were eager to get underway and test themselves against a strong George Watson's side.

The first half saw a nervous approach from both sides which was littered with simple mistakes.

RGS had lots of early possession and some try-scoring opportunities, but couldn't get the ball across the line. In the end, George Watson's scored the opening try, but failed to convert the extra points.

Ikenna Obonna (Year 13) showed great physical strength and speed on the wing with some great attacking runs which eventually paid off as he broke through George Watson's barrier for the first RGS points of the season, with Oliver Handcock converting to keep RGS very much in the game.

George Watson's quickly bounced back scoring two quick unconverted tries, before Handcock added a penalty and reduced the deficit as RGS went in 10-15 down at half term.

The second half caught up with the boys as their fitness started to falter and George Watson's capitalised, seemingly camped inside the RGS half. Despite some valiant defending, George Watson's went under the posts and stretched their lead 20-10.

George Watson's pressure continued, forcing the boys to step up their defence with some fantastic communication, close contact tackles and superb discipline that kept George Watson's from increasing their lead.

A fantastic play just before full time, involving nearly the whole team, was well rewarded with Joseph Lee (Year 13) finishing in the corner.

The final score was 15-20 and although losing is always tough, especially considering the amount of scoring opportunities, there was plenty of positives from the game which will help the boys prepare for Friday's (9th September) showpiece at Kingston Park against Durham School.
