Students enjoy North East book awards

Year 7 and 8 students attended the 2016 North East Book Awards, held at the Centre for Life on 6 June.

The students have spent the last few months reading, reviewing and enjoying all the nominated titles.

Looking at the Stars by Jo Cotterill won the award, a book that was top of all the students' lists. Cotterill's winning title follows the story of sisters Amina and Jenna as they leave home an start a devastatingly painful journey into a refugee camp.

All the nominated authors took to the stage to discuss their writing, offering funny and fascinating insights into their lives, much to the pleasure of the students. Highlights included Gill Lewis dressed as a gorilla, demonstrating how to understand gorilla speak and Ross Welford doing a magic trick which convinced us all that time travel is possible.

The wonderful evening was finished with students getting their books signed and having the opportunity to have an informal chat with all the authors.
