Team Chess Challenge

The national final of the Team Chess Challenge took place at Imperial College, London recently.

The tournament, open to students up to Under 19 level, has an extremely short time limit, ten minutes per game, with two seconds added after every move to stop players from losing out on time.

The team of James Moreby (Year 8), Joseph Dalton (Year 10), Zheming Zhang (Year 9) and Joshua Fernandes (Year 11) were hoping for a similar if not better performance to 2015 which saw them finish second.

Round one saw them beat Torquay Boys' Grammar School 4-0, before suffering a loss (3.5-0.5) in round two to eventual winners Manchester Grammar School. Round three would see the boys win again, this time picking up a 3-1 win against Mill Hill School followed by a heavy loss to Millfield School in round four (4-0), but this was followed up by an equally heavy victory (4-0) against Simon Langton Grammar School for Boys in the final round.

The boys finished with an overall tally of 11.5/20, and although this didn't better 2015's result, the team did finish third picking up the bronze trophies.
