The three musketeers

Three talented fencers from RGS were involved in two prestigious fencing competitions recently.

Millie Robson (Year 10), Oscar May (Year 9) and Eve Golden (Year 8) headed to Crystal Palace to compete in the prestigious Public Schools' Fencing Championships. All three competed in the Epee categories; Millie at Junior level and Oscar and Eve at Mount-Haes level.

The competition sees entries from the top independent schools across the country and is always hotly contested, so it was fantastic to see all three finishing in the top half of their draws. Millie finished 13th, Oscar 21st and Eve took a well deserved 5th place, making it through to the Last Eight and narrowly missing out on a semi-final place, losing her game 15-11.

Next up for the trio would be a trip overseas to Poland for Challenge Wratislavia. This is the largest fencing competition worldwide for junior athletes. Millie represented Scotland and Oscar and Eve were joint by Year 6 student Toby Aberdeen representing Team Newcastle.

All four fencers did themselves proud with all involved in some very close games. Millie finished 146th in the U15 Epee (third in her Poule), Eve was 48th in the U13 Epee bowing out to the 10th seeded player for Lithuania, Oscar was 78th in the U15 Epee, losing a very close game to a Polish fencer 13-15 and finally Toby finished 38th in the U11 Epee and again was on the losing end of a close game, 7-8.
