Under 11s make RGS history

Under 11s make RGS history

Whilst the Senior School hockey teams have been busy with their weekend fixtures, dominating across a number of age groups, we can't forget about our Junior School hockey teams who have been making waves in their own right.

No more so than our Under 11s team who've made RGS history by becoming the first team to reach the IAPS National Hockey finals.

The team of eight travelled to Repton School in Derbyshire for the qualifying round (northern England) of the IAPS Under 11 hockey competition. In a tough group, made up of some of the best hockey schools in the country, the girls got off to a flying start with a 3-1 win against Bromsgrove School.

They went from strength to strength, beating Wakefield 5-0, RGS The Grange 3-0 and Winchester House 2-0, before finishing off the qualification with a 1-1 draw against GSAL; although qualification was already certain.

Four wins and a draw meant RGS topped the group and would go on to play Cheltenham College in the quarter final. An excellent performance from the girls saw them beat Cheltenham 2-0 and reach the semi-finals where they would face Bilton Grange who'd just put out the favourites (Repton Prep/Foremarke Hall).

The girls were determined to put in a good performance and with some impressive hit-outs from Lexie Haigh and with Jesse Combe and Jessica Cottee supplying the goals, the girls advanced to the final with a 3-0 win.

A very close encounter ensued in the final with RGS taking on Fairfield (Loughborough). Both teams went all-out and there was some impressed play from both teams. Fairfield would go on to win 2-1 and be crowned North England winners, however RGS still qualified for the national finals.

It's been a fantastic full-team performance from the Under 11s this season with goalkeeper, Lola Fazlic only conceding four goals in a total of 14 games. She's been superbly protected by defenders Celia Talks and Naomi Parker, who have given away very few short corners. The goal machines also must not be forgotten, with Jessica Cottee, Jesse Combe, Lexie Haig, Laura Cottee and Gargi Mannikar netting 20 goals between them.

Preparations are well underway for the finals which take place at Repton School on Friday 11th November and we'll be following them every step of the way.
