Visit by Author Michelle Paver to Year 7 Students

On Wednesday 17th September the author, Michelle Paver, spoke to a packed theatre of Year 7 students, plus guests from Newcastle High School, following an excellent introduction by Freddie Whitfield. Michelle is the author of the bestselling fantasy series ‘The Chronicles of Ancient Darkness’ set in the Stone Age, which won the Guardian Children’s Fiction award in 2010, and she has a new series ‘Gods and Warriors’ set during the Bronze Age. Students were able to listen to her talk about her books and how she researches for them. As her stories tell of life in hostile and dangerous environments her research has taken her all over the world and into some potentially dangerous situations, including an encounter with a polar bear on a trip to the Arctic.   Michelle explained and illustrated the challenges people had to survive with the resources at hand and the students learned some very interesting (and slightly gruesome) facts about the Bronze Age.  Who knew that they would use every part of an animal (even the juice from the eyes for glue!) so as not to waste anything.

After the talk and question and answer session students were invited to personally meet the author and have their books signed.  They were also able to touch artifacts from the Stone Age including an axe head which was fascinating.
