Yichen captures national title for third time in a row

Year 7 student, Yichen Han, has been crowned the U12 champion of the Delancey UK Chess challenge for the third time in a row.

Dominating during the qualification stages with a 100% winning rate, Yichen progressed to the knock-out match where he swept aside his opponent to make it to the final. He won this match with the white but lost with the black, however in the subsequent Armageddon game, thanks to his excellent skill, Yichen blitzed his opponent and convincingly won the championship.

Yichen, who started playing chess when he was five-years-old, was hailed by UK Grandmaster, David Howell, who claimed it is ‘no mean feat for a child to win the title three times’.

Already accredited with a FIDE Candidate Master title, awarded to any player with an established FIDE rating of 2200 or higher, Yichen aspires to become an International Master or even a Grandmaster of the game.

Crowned No. 15 in the Junior World Championship in Spain last year, his biggest success to date, Yichen has been invited to Budapest by Grandmaster, Judit Polgar, to attend another international competition later this month.

We wish him the best of luck and look forward to hearing how he gets on.
