Careers and Higher Education

Senior School

The Futures programme in the Senior School provides personalised advice and guidance to help students make informed choices about their subjects, further study and potential career opportunities. We aim to ensure every student feels confident about their next steps.
All students have access to one-to-one careers appointments with a qualified careers guidance professional throughout their time in the Senior School.
In Years 7 and 8 students are introduced, through PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education) lessons, to the idea of thinking ahead to developing goals and ambitions.
In Year 9, following a presentation by the Deputy Head (Academic) and the Head of Futures, students begin a careers programme to help them choose the right subjects to study at GCSE.
In Year 10, students use Unifrog to explore their strengths and interests and begin considering potential future careers. This followed up in Year 11 with an in-depth, individual interview, focusing on Sixth Form subject choices and possible higher education and career options. The interview report is then shared with both parents and students.
Year 11 students and parents attend a Pathways Evening in February to hear talks about A-Level and BTEC subject options, university applications and apprenticeships, as well as to discuss choices with academic subject heads and the RGS Futures team.
Year 11 and Sixth Form students are invited to an in-house Careers and Gap Year Fair in September, and a range of careers talks and visits take place throughout each year.
Sixth Form

The Futures programme in the Sixth Form offers advice and guidance to help students make informed choices about higher education, apprenticeship options and potential career pathways.
In September, Sixth Form students are invited to an in-house Careers and Gap Year fair and a variety of talks and visits are arranged throughout the year. The Year 12 programme includes presentations by universities and employers, and the Head of Futures also gives various presentations to students and parents, including a talk about the UCAS process in April.
A strong emphasis is placed on individual guidance, All Year 12 students are allocated a UCAS Referee in February, who acts as a mentor to the student throughout the Sixth Form. They provide support with higher education planning and the entire UCAS
application process (for those applying to university). The Head of Futures also provides support and guidance to students applying for apprenticeships and alternative pathways.
All students have access to Unifrog to support exploration of degree choices and future pathways. Specialist guidance is available for students applying to study healthcare professions (including Medicine, Dentistry, Veintary Science) and those applying to Oxford and Cambridge, including study groups and practice interviews. Advice on making applications to overseas universities is also provided.
