Learning and Teaching

An overview of how we learn and teach at RGS

One of the things that makes RGS special is our commitment to learning; not just for our students, but for ourselves as teachers and as a school. We are always reflecting on what works, learning from one another and looking for ways to make the experience we offer our students even better.

To do this we have developed in-house a shared framework of 12 components of high-quality learning and teaching that we have been working to embed into all classroom practice.  The 12 components form the foundation of learning and teaching in the school and guide what students experience in lessons.  In simple terms, they ensure that:

  • Strong relationships come first, so every student feels known, supported and respected.
  • Teaching is responsive, adapting to your child’s needs, prior knowledge and progress.
  • Skilled questioning encourages deeper thinking and understanding.
  • Regular retrieval practice helps knowledge become secure and long-lasting.
  • Clear routines create a calm, safe and purposeful learning environment.
  • Students are active participants, engaging meaningfully in their learning.
  • Feedback is purposeful and actionable, helping students improve and grow.
  • High expectations are consistently maintained, with appropriate challenge for all learners.
  • Creative thinking and problem solving are encouraged across the curriculum.
  • Learning objectives are clear, so students understand what they are learning and why.
  • Wellbeing is prioritised, recognising its importance in successful learning.
  • Tasks are carefully structured, with appropriate support and challenge to enable success.

At the heart of our approach is a simple vision: every child should experience teaching that is ambitious, purposeful and responsive to them as an individual. We want our classrooms to be places where students feel known and supported, while also being challenged to think deeply, develop independence and take increasing ownership of their learning. Our teachers draw on their expertise, experience and knowledge of their students to create lessons that are rigorous and engaging, helping young people to develop not only the knowledge and skills they need to succeed, but also the curiosity, confidence and resilience to become lifelong learners.
