Jasmine in Year 8 wins a BAFTA for her game design

Young RGS female designer, Jasmine, wins the 2022 Young Game Designer competition receiving a BAFTA Award for her concept creation and game artwork.

Jasmine Guan entered the Game Concept 10-14years category with a game called ‘Tiled in Twilight’, which she describes as an “urban dystopian themed pixelated picross puzzle game and the path to tell the truth”. The hope and goals for this game is not only to give the player the challenging experience of solving ‘nonogram puzzlers’, but to spread awareness of those fighting diseases.

The youngest winner of the digital ceremony will have access to masterclasses and mentorship from various gaming industry professionals, be featured in the Power Up exhibition at the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester and the opportunity to attend a special showcase event at BAFTA’s HQ in London. The online awards were presented by actor Inel Tomlinson and streamed live on the BAFTA Teens and Kids YouTube channel.

Rather than focusing on IT skills, Newcastle Royal Grammar School concentrates on programming and computational thinking, logical reasoning and problem solving. The school is also part of a group called Digital School House for whom they provide game design workshops to local schools every week, enabling the community to benefit from their forward-thinking initiatives too.
