Lower Sixth student, Daniela M A, has been awarded an Arkwright Engineering Scholarship at a virtual ceremony.
The Arkwright Engineering Scholarships are awarded to the most talented STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) students in UK schools, and help to ensure that those young people become engaged with engineering careers.
Daniela is delighted to become the school's first applicant from a Computer Science background to be successful in gaining such an esteemed scholarship.
"I am incredibly grateful for the opportunities the Arkwright scholarship will give me in software engineering," said Daniela, who is sponsored by the Reece Foundation.
This year, the Arkwright Scholarship had a rigorous selection process comprising: an assessed application form, including a teacher’s reference; and a virtual interview with experts from academia and industry. EDT department staff supported Daniela throughout the selection process with a range of tutorials and mock interviews.
An Arkwright Scholarship supports a student through their Sixth Form studies and consists of an annual financial award, and access to enrichment activities, such as mentoring and industry visits, that enhance a scholar's experience of engineering in an industrial context.
Speaking about the achievement, Pete Warne, Head of Engineering, Design and Technology, said: "We are thrilled that Daniela has earned a scholarship this year. She is a very worthy recipient with a wealth of experiences and interests related to the field of software engineering. She is our first scholar from a computer science background, having also impressed interviewers with her coursework project.
"Our students have benefited enormously from Arkwright Engineering Scholarships over the years. In addition to the financial support, there has been invaluable support from industry-based mentors and advise to help with next steps towards their engineering careers."
Arkwright Engineering Scholarships are highly regarded by university admission tutors and industry recruiters; they are one of the most prestigious accolades that a talented Sixth Form student can receive.
We are exceedingly grateful to the sponsors who fund and support these scholarships.
