Zuhair signs for Gateshead Academy

Footballer, Zuhair A, has taken one step closer to his dream of becoming a professional footballer after signing for Gateshead Football Academy.

The Year 10 student, who plays as either a winger or centra attacking midfielder, will join the U15 to play in the Junior Premier League.

Zuhair, who is naturally left-footed but can play with both feet, has been kicking a ball since he was a toddler and joined his first team, in Bristol, at the age of five. At the age of nine, he joined his first football club in Newcastle and was also invited to join Newcastle United Foundation Advanced Training at the same time. He trained for a total of five years with Newcastle United Foundation and during this time he also played for several local teams including Red House Farm (U10), Benfield (U12, U13 and U14) and East End (U15). 

"It feels that I have moved a step forward towards my ambition and I am very excited to improve myself more and more," said Zuhair. 

Playing for Gateshead will be a big commitment as Zuhair will train on Mondays and Wednesdays, for up to 3 hours per session, as well as playing a match on Saturdays. When he’s not playing for Gateshead, Zuhair will be helping the school team out, which he is also passionate about doing.

Speaking about Zuhair's success, Mr Brown, Head of football, said: " From Year 7,  it was clear to see that Zuhair was a talented sportsman. He posses great pace and agility which, combined with his high level of skill make him a dangerous proposition with the ball. Zuhair loves to dribble and is at his best when taking on opponents.

"It has been fantastic to see Zuhair’s progression and we look forward to seeing him flourish over the coming years. Everyone at the school is delighted that he is getting to follow his dream of becoming a professional footballer and we wish him the very best of luck in his pursuit of this dream."
