Mural of The Great Wave

Artist, Jesdina D, has completed a stunning mural which she started at the beginning of the year.

The Year 9 student has spent the last eight months recreating The Great Wave which was originally published between 1829 and 1833 as a woodblock print by the Japanese ukiyo-e artist Hokusai.

Using a mixture of wall paints and acrylics, Jesdina worked on the mural during her free time and was delighted to finish it at the end of the summer holidays.

Speaking about her choice of image, Jesdina, said: “The Great Wave is a famous artwork which I personally love because of the emotion it depicts. The wave is about to strike the people on the boat which shows how strong nature is compared to humans. In a way, it tries to say how we shouldn’t underestimate nature.”

Measuring 77 inches in hight and 92.3 inches in width, the painting is bordered by quotes and saying of some of her favourite artists who she takes inspiration from.

Jesdina continued: “This project has taught me so much in terms of perseverance and determination to reach the finished goal. My family’s support and motivation were very encouraging for my success!”
