A New Chapter for RGS Futures

WE ARE DELIGHTED TO WELCOME KATHRYN SAUNDERS AS THE NEW HEAD OF FUTURES, BRINGING FRESH ENERGY AND A WEALTH OF EXPERIENCE TO A ROLE THAT SUPPORTS STUDENTS IN SHAPING THEIR ASPIRATIONS AND NEXT STEPS BEYOND OUR GATES ON ESKDALE TERRACE.

Kathryn Saunders, Head of Futures at RGS Newcastle

Kathryn joins RGS following a varied career in marketing communications, higher education, and careers guidance. Her journey began in the agency world before she transitioned into the university sector, where she discovered a deep passion for helping young people realise their strengths and interests.

With roles at institutions including Goldsmiths, University of London, the London School of Economics & Political Science (LSE), Durham University Business School, and Northumbria University, Kathryn has worked across both academic and charitable sectors, always with a focus on empowering students to make informed decisions about their futures.

“The most exciting part of my work is helping students unlock what they are good at and what they enjoy,” Kathryn explains. “Sometimes it is about giving them the confidence to move forward, and sometimes it’s about helping them connect the dots between their passions and the opportunities available to them.”

At RGS, the Futures programme is designed to be inclusive, exploratory, and deeply embedded in the wider school experience. Kathryn and her team support students through university applications, Oxbridge and medical pathways, international opportunities,  apprenticeships, and much more. But her vision goes beyond application cycles - it is about starting conversations early, encouraging curiosity, and helping students reflect on the rich tapestry of experiences they already have.

“Careers education at RGS is not confined to one department,” she explains. “Every teacher, every subject, every club, and society contributes to shaping a student’s future. Whether it is sport, drama, music, or taking part in RGS’s diverse co-curricular programme, these experiences help students discover what excites them - and that is where futures begin.”

Kathryn is also passionate about engaging parents and carers in the process. “We want families to feel part of the journey. That means sharing resources, prompting conversations at home, and helping parents understand how they can support their children in exploring emerging sectors and career flexibility.”

As she steps into the role, Kathryn builds on the legacy of Mr Mike Downie, whose thoughtful leadership and pastoral care shaped the Futures programme over several decades.

Welcoming Kathryn to the school, Headmaster Mr Geoffrey Stanford said: “As we thank Mr Downie for his extraordinary service, we are delighted to welcome Kathryn Saunders, whose experience and student-centred approach will ensure that our Futures programme continues to thrive and evolve.

“I am confident that her wealth of experience and vision will help our students navigate their next steps with confidence and curiosity.”

Mr Chris Quayle, Deputy Head Academic, added: “We are thrilled to have Kathryn join the team. Her commitment to early engagement and holistic guidance will ensure that every student feels supported - whatever path they choose.”
