Performance sessions will be held at RGS's purpose built facilities on-site and led by experienced and enthusiastic RGS staff, alongside renowned external partners.

Each session will inspire participants to improve individually alongside developing team working skills and importantly having fun! Children from across the North East are warmly welcome to join any session.

RGS Newcastle's Y10-13 students present Shakespeare in Love (High School Version), based on the screenplay by Marc Norman and Tom Stoppard and adapted for the stage by Lee Hall. This amateur production of “Shakespeare in Love (High School Edition)” is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals Ltd. on behalf of Samuel French Ltd.

We are delighted to announce that this annual event will return on Christmas 2024. This year's match is an extra special affair, marking the 125th anniversary of the Novocastrians' formation. 
Everyone is welcome on Saturday, the 28th of December, to play or watch at Sutherland Park (Novocastrians RFC), the bar will be open, and all are welcome. Kick-off is at 1 pm, and the match is open to all levels of players. You can play for as long or as little as you like - it is very much a social game!

Come and join us for our Senior Carol Service which includes Christmas readings, congregational carols and performances from the Intermediate Choir, Senior Choir, Chamber Choir and Symphony Orchestra. 

We will be serving mulled wine and mince pies on the Church Green after the service.

A festive celebration for charity!

Step into the magic of the season at the RGS Winterwonderland.  Join us for a joyful afternoon filled with festive student-run stalls, all designed to get you in the Christmas spirit whilst supporting two fantastic charities.

A 5pm performance by the massed student orchestra of the North East.

RGS has teamed up with Music Partnerships North, North Tyneside Music Hub and schools across the region for a day of music making. This short performance is standing room only (unless arrangements have been made with RGS) and will consist of half an hours’ music showcasing music created throughout the day.

We are delighted to extend an invitation to our wider community for this year’s Founder's Service on Wednesday 16th October 2024.  The very special event will reflect on the almost 500-year history of the school and the indelible impact of ONs on the world. 

Every year we host our Founder's service at Newcastle Cathedral where all of Y7 are invited to connect with the history of the RGS. 

RGS is Newcastle’s oldest institution of learning.  Founded during Henry VIII's reign at the site where the Newcastle Cathedral now sits, Queen Elizabeth I later granted the burgesses of the City of Newcastle The Great Charter on 22nd March 1600. Within the Charter was the direction to incorporate a grammar school in the city, entitled to hold land.

We will be celebrating reunions for the Classes of 2014 (10-year), 2004 (20-year), 1994 (30-year), 1984 (40-year), 1974 (50-year), 1964 (60-year) and 1954 (70-year) on Friday 4th and Saturday 5th October 2024.  
Please note, the 'Class of...' relates to the year that you left RGS, aged 18. 

Old Novos from these reunion groups are invited to celebrate the milestone at our annual ONA Newcastle Dinner. This will be a fabulous opportunity to catch up with old friends. The dress code is black tie. The evening will commence with a drinks reception at 6.15pm, followed by a three course dinner and carriages at 11pm. 

We will then be hosting additional reunion activities on Saturday 5th October, including a tour of the old (and new!) school buildings; a visit to the RGS Archive; opportunity to view an RGS home sports fixture for those interested; all followed by a light lunch.

Old Novos from these year groups are invited to join for both the Friday and Saturday activities, or just the Friday Dinner or Saturday day time activities if you prefer.

We are thrilled to confirm John Humpish (ON 73-81) as this year's guest speaker. John spent 25 years in corporate marketing roles, including running the global marketing function at Axa, Deutsche Bank and Zurich. He then ventured into fintech, and co-founded Starling Bank, along with M:QUBE, Ziglu and several other fintech businesses. This Spring he is trekking from John O'Groats to Lands End to raise funds for London's Air Ambulance. 

Once again for the ON Dinner there is a reduced price for ONs aged 30 and under, so we're excited to see all generations of Old Novos represented.

On Saturday 21st September 2024, RGS will play their first major hockey and rugby home games of the season vs The Grammar School at Leeds and we warmly invite the RGS Community to support our teams.  
 
The fixtures are as follows:

• 11.00am Boys Rugby U13 A, B and C

Girls Hockey will be on the ATP on the main site. Boys Rugby will be played on both the grass pitch on the main site and Mooracres (off Abbotsford Terrace).  

To kick-start a great season of sport, for this special occasion refreshments and breakfast sandwiches available for all spectators in the Dining Hall throughout.

Soak up the Olympic buzz and regional pride and be a part of RGS history as Kate goes for gold! 

Take a seat in the school’s Agora in the Main Building to watch Kate compete as part of TeamGB’s five-athlete triathlon team.

No festival would be complete without feasting aplenty and we are lucky to be joined by a number of popular local food vendors. Rain? We’ll don a plastic poncho, put up our RGS umbrellas and embrace the Geordie summer.

Our Junior School Parent Team will be fully integrating their stalls to offer a vibrant array of fun and games.

We would also love you to support us and your children by coming along to enjoy the day, actively or sprawled on a deckchair – the choice is yours!

A token system (£0.50p per token) will run on the day to take part in some of the activities like the the giant inflatables, tombola, throw the sponge at the teacher and many more. Tokens can be purchased on the day but if you want to avoid the queues you can order in advance and collect on your arrival!

In the latest in our series of inspiring 'RGS Talks' we are thrilled to welcome Dr Fiona Hill CMG.  A coalminer's daughter from Bishop Auckland, Fiona went on to advise three US Presidents and is now Chancellor at Durham University.  This event is open to RGS students, and students from our partner State schools.  RGS parents will be able to watch this fascinating talk live online, details have been sent to parents directly.

Calling the RGS Classes of 2021, 2020, 2019, 2018 and 2017. Are you missing RGS? We miss you very much and we’d really like to invite you back to school! On Tuesday 5th July we’re holding a very special reunion event, with an opportunity for our current Lower Sixth Form to hear your wise counsel. 

We are delighted that after two years of absence the (long awaited!) RGS Summer Garden Party is returning on the evening of RGS Day (bookable here).  This is a relaxed night of celebration for RGS parents, current and former staff and Old Novos.  There will be drinks served on the Rugby Pitch in the early evening sun, with acoustic performances by students.  In the marquee middle Eastern sharing platters will be served, the RGS Ceilidh band will make its debut followed by music from our resident DJ Mr James Miller.  There will be various fun and fundraising for the RGS Bursary Campaign, and a cash/card bar, we promise an evening of joy and friendship.

RGS Drama presents Skylight, by David Hare, which first premiered 20 years ago, is about both the state of the heart and the state of the nation.

We are delighted to be able to host the RGS Sports Awards event to celebrate the success of our students and teams this academic year.

School bands from all over the North East perform to a professional panel of judges in the hope of winning the coveted title of Band of the Year.

All prospective and current students are invited to come along and try some musical instruments in our Performing Arts Centre and meet some of our Visiting Music Teachers, while parents can find out how to book lessons. 

Inspired by the twisted genius of Roald Dahl, Matilda The Musical is a captivating masterpiece that revels in the anarchy of childhood, the power of imagination and the inspiring story of a girl who dreams of a better life.  

'Walking  the Wall'
The Friends of RGS is an independently run group made up of current and former parents, Old Novos and wider friends, with all new walkers warmly welcomed.

The group aims to arrange three walks per year, with at least two options on the day to suit, to a location in Northumberland, North Yorkshire, Durham or The Lake District.

The Summer's Walk is Hadrian's Wall 1900th Anniversary Walk: The Sill via Vindolanda, Housesteads and Sycamore Gap Hadrian's Wall Circular Walk.

The competition, which is fiercely contested between the four school Houses, includes performances from a wide spectrum, all reflecting the diversity of the dance that is enjoyed at the RGS.
