Admissions FAQs

RGS educates over 1,300 students across the whole school (about 57% boys and 43% girls). In the Junior School, there are 260+ students (approx. 56% boys, 44% girls).

We continually invest in first‑class facilities - academic spaces, arts, sport and co‑curricular - designed to spark a love of learning and life beyond the classroom. Families often begin with our virtual tour and facilities information.

Our whole‑school Open Morning runs each November; the next one will be in November 2026. In the meantime, we’d love to welcome you for a private tour - a calm way to see the school in action and ask questions: RGS Private Tour. We are a day school and do not offer boarding. Families living overseas who are relocating to the North East are welcome to apply; students must be able to attend school in person and have the right to study in the UK. If you’re moving internationally, please contact Admissions so we can advise on assessment arrangements and start dates that make sense for your family.

You’ll be guided step by step, and you can save your progress and return at any time before the deadline. If you’re applying for a bursary, you’ll find the option within the same portal.

For 2025-26, annual fees are £16,863 (Junior) and £20,016 (Senior/Sixth Form), inclusive of VAT. Lunch is optional and charged termly. A £200 deposit is payable on acceptance. Flexible payment plans (termly or 11 monthly by Direct Debit) are available. Full details are on our Fees page.

Yes. There is a £25 application fee per application, payable at the time you submit your online form. This fee must be paid for your application to be considered.

If your child is offered a place and you choose to accept, a £200 acceptance deposit will then be required. This deposit secures the place and is offset against your first term’s fees.

Yes, RGS offers means‑tested bursaries at our main entry points, and specialist Sixth Form bursaries such as the Reece Foundation Bursary for future engineers.

If you wish to apply for a bursary, simply tick the bursary option when completing your online application and submit the required financial information by the published deadline.

Important: Once you apply for a bursary place, you cannot later switch to a fee‑paying place if your bursary application is unsuccessful. Please consider this carefully before choosing the bursary route.

No special tutoring is required. The best preparation is wonderfully straightforward: read widely, stay curious, practise problem‑solving in everyday life, and get a good night’s sleep.

For Year 7 and Sixth Form, familiarity with verbal/non‑verbal reasoning and comprehension can boost confidence, but we’re looking first and foremost for potential, attitude and fit with our lively learning community.

Please share any relevant information in your application so we can arrange reasonable adjustments (e.g., extra time, quiet rooms, coloured overlays) where appropriate. Our Learning Support team works closely with families throughout the school to build the right scaffolding for progress and confidence.

Assessments are normally held on-site so we can meet your child, and they can experience the environment. If you’re overseas or face exceptional circumstances, contact Admissions - where possible, we’ll explore practical alternatives that keep things fair and supportive for your child.

You’ll receive a confirmation on screen and via email from the application portal. Next‑step information (assessment dates, interview times, etc) follows in line with the published timelines for each entry point.
