Junior School Admissions
Applications for September 2026 entry are now closed.
Families interested in joining RGS Junior School for 2027 and future entry years can still start an application at any time. Early applications help us support you through every stage of the process.
The RGS Junior School has developed significantly in recent years, and we now have over 260 students, with three classes per year group (from Year 3 to Year 6).
When children join the Junior School, they enter an environment of exciting co-curricular opportunities and a modern 'grammar-school' education of challenge and pace. The best of modern technology is employed by a dedicated and energetic team of teachers who look to develop the potential of each individual in their care.
Our students' high achievement is well-founded upon a broad base of co-curricular activity and classroom curricular provision, designed to harness the enthusiasm and interest of the students. The call of 'One School, One Team' sets the tone for an ethos of collegiality, with everyone urged to play their part for the benefit of all.
There is more information below about our Admissions process for our main Junior School entry points (Year 3 & Year 5), and if you'd like to read more about daily life in our Junior School, please do take a look at the pages for current families here.

Families interested in applying to RGS for 2027 entry and future years are warmly invited to join our upcoming Virtual Information Evening.
This online session is a friendly and informative introduction to life at RGS and our admissions process, designed for families at any stage of their journey.
Year 3

We currently welcome up to 60 boys and girls into Year 3 each year, and they form three classes of 20. Children who apply are invited to spend a day here during the Assessment Week. They take part in a variety of activities that allow them to demonstrate skills and knowledge, their capacity for learning, working co-operatively and sticking at tasks, and the attributes and qualities – not all strictly academic – that will underpin their ability to thrive at the RGS. Elements of both literacy and mathematics are taught and assessed during the day. We also ask for a report from all applicants' current schools.
September 2027 applicants to Year 3:
Our admissions process for 2027 entry will follow the same structure as in previous years, including:

Year 5

We welcome between 8 and 12 new boys and girls into Year 5, and class sizes are increased up to 24 to accommodate the new children. During our Assessment Morning, girls and boys sit short test papers in literacy and mathematics. A small number are then invited back to attend an Activity Day.
