Though schools are primarily about people, they work better in quality buildings. Having occupied its present location since 1906, the Royal Grammar School is very fortunate to have fine core buildings, clustered round a magnificent hall. In recent years, however, the RGS has continued to invest heavily to ensure it has the finest facilities of any school in the north of England. The school is currently well into an exciting multi-million pound building programme which has already seen some exciting new developments take place.

Sixth Form Centre

In January 2020, we opened our new Sixth Form centre - the combination of the old sixth form and old library into a modern, and much larger area. The open-plan style centre comprises individual study pods, a Sixth Form only bank of computers, a space for collaborative working, printing and photocopying facilities and a new coffee bar, serving hot and cold barista style drinks and snacks.

Library

In September 2019, phase three of our ambitious plans to upgrade our facilities was completed when our new state-of-the-art library building opened. The building also includes art studios, maths classrooms, a pastoral suite and an assembly space.

IT

The school has invested heavily to ensure it has the finest IT facilities and all classrooms have interactive whiteboards and projectors. There are 13 computer suites available to students and there is wi-fi accessible across the school. The Junior School also have class sets of iPads for use in lessons.

Music and Performing Arts

The school has a dedicated Performing Arts Centre built around an impressive theatre which has professional sound and lighting facilities and raked seating for over 300. There is also a fully-equipped recording studio, a dance studio with ballet barre and sprung floor, a keyboard lab and 10 individual teaching rooms which are used for private music tuition.

Sport

On-site, the school has a state-of-the-art artificial turf pitch, rugby pitch and several play areas. Off-site facilities include a football pitch, three rugby pitches and Jesmond Cricket Ground which is a five minute walk from the school. We also use many other city-based facilities for sports such as football, tennis, indoor climbing, squash, hockey and athletics.

In September 2015, the school unveiled a new state-of-the-art sports facility which includes a new swimming pool; a second sports hall with a climbing wall; a new fitness suite; a weights room; an aerobic dance studio; a new suite of sports offices and new administration and changing rooms to accommodate all the school's foreseeable sporting needs.

Science and Technology

The school has a large Science and Technology Centre which houses 15 specialist science laboratories for Biology, Chemistry and Physics, as well as two design and technology laboratories and a teaching kitchen.

Junior School

In addition to 12 classrooms, the Junior School also have a dedicated art room (with ceramics kiln), an IT suite, a science lab, individual music practise rooms, two library spaces and an exciting new green-screen room for making high quality video footage. The Junior School have also invested heavily in iPad technology. Outdoors, there are two creative play areas with climbing equipment, a dedicated netball pitch and an 80m running track with jumping pit. The Junior School also have access to the sporting facilities in the Senior School.
