Thinking about getting into teaching? Passionate about maths and physics?
RGS leads the National Mathematics and Physics Newcastle Hub for School Centred Initial Teacher Training (NMAP SCITT).
We run subject-specific training, led by expert teachers in Mathematics and Physics, so trainees cover the subjects they really want to go on to teach, rather than a general syllabus, whilst gaining more in-school experience than University led teacher training.
For teachers training in maths and physics, Government-funded bursaries (up to £30k tax free) are available.
There are part-time and full-time training options available. All trainees are based at RGS for one day each week for training. The RGS has great facilities and a highly experienced and enthusiastic team that will ensure trainees receive the best possible teacher training experience. It is the perfect base to get together with other trainees in Mathematics or Physics to share ideas and experiences and learn from the talented teacher training team.
Full-time trainees will spend the other four days in the week at one of our growing network of fantastic placement schools, where they will build their experience and learn from some great teaching mentors, so they can enjoy a flying start to their teaching careers.

RGS School experience days
Spending time in a classroom will not only give you the chance to see for yourself what it’s like to be a teacher, and if you do want to take things further the experience will also help strengthen your application for teacher training.
At RGS’s school experience days, you’ll be able to observe lessons and pastoral work, and get to chat to our maths and physics teachers about their day-to-day life in a school setting.
Our next school experience days are taking place on the 18th April 2024, and the 6th of June 2024.
